D2.4 – Initial Catalogue of Solutions, Practices, and Support Systems

This document presents the initial version of the GreenInCities Catalogue of Solutions, Practices, and Support Systems, a public document developed within Work Package 2 (WP2), which focuses on methods and tools for local greening. It is designed to support co-creation processes within the GreenInCities project, enabling citizens and decision-makers to develop context-specific solutions for urban sustainability. It serves as a living document that will evolve based on insights gathered throughout the project, with a final version (D2.5) scheduled for release in December 2026.
The GreenInCities Catalogue of Solutions, Practices, and Support Systems - Initial Version is a comprehensive repository focused on the integration of nature into urban environments, aligned with the New European Bauhaus framework.

The catalogue is intended to inspire and inform a broad range of stakeholders, including:
City officials and local government representatives
Policymakers involved in urban planning and sustainability
Urbanists and professionals in architecture, landscape design, and infrastructure development
Citizens and decision-makers in GreenInCities pilot sites

The comprehensive list of solutions, practices and support systems included the catalogue aimed at activating the public space, implementing greening strategies, boosting resilience, participation and cohesiveness. The elements are tailored to meet climate challenges, societal challenges, and human-nature cohabitation challenges. The catalogue is divided into four main categories. The four main categories are further divided into functional sub-categories.
New Space Functions Integrating Green: These solutions are new architecture and landscape design typologies that re-imagine urban functions to promote cohesiveness and green integration. Functional sub-categories: Leisure & Culture, Education, Health & Wellbeing.
Urban Green Elements: These solutions are innovative elements for buildings and public spaces designed to enhance resilience and incorporate greenery into urban environments. Functional sub-categories, Green Walls & Vertical Elements, Green Floors, Greenery, Water Management.
Green Practices: These practices aim to reconnect people with nature and wildlife, enhance social cohesion, raise environmental awareness, develop new skills, and support the local solidarity economy. Functional sub-categories: Skills Development, Education & Awareness Rising, Art & Creativity, Sharing & Wellbeing, Biodiversity Protection.
Horizontal Governance Support Systems: These support systems empower individuals, local communities and decision makers through governance support to create, restore and maintain urban greening interventions. Functional sub-categories: Co-Mapping, Participatory Decision-Making.

The framework described here allows for a comprehensive overview of the elements of the catalogue, particularly through the lens of the New European Bauhaus framework, utilising the New European Bauhaus Compass. The primary goal of this framework is to offer a detailed and comparable narrative of the elements included in the catalogue.
The New European Bauhaus framework: The catalogue aligns with the New European Bauhaus pillars: ‘beautiful,’ ‘sustainable,’ and ‘together.’ Each solution, practice, and support system is described through these pillars, guided by questions from the New European Bauhaus Compass. The catalogue also marks the ambitions each element fulfills.
Human and non-human target users: This category provides a brief description of the diverse range of human and non-human target users for each solution, practice, and support system.
Coexistence strategy: This section highlights how the solutions, practices, and support systems support human and non-human cohabitation.
Climate adaptation: Each solution, practice, and support system includes a short description of the climate-related challenges it addresses. These descriptions highlight how each element contributes to climate adaptation and mitigation efforts and their critical role in fostering sustainable urban environments.
Impact scores: These scores communicate the provisional impact of each element of the catalogue. It is important to note that this scoring system enables easy comparison among elements, but it does not provide conclusions about the actual impacts. The four categories respectively communicate: the ability of the solutions, practices and support systems to enhance climate resilience, the ability to encourage socialisation and participation, the capability to promote harmony between humans and nature and lastly the ability to provide health benefits. The scoring scale of the four categories is: absent (0), minimal (1), partial (2), substantial (3), and exemplary (4).
Implementation scores: The categories of implementation scores have been selected to provide a comprehensive framework for comparing the solutions, practices, and support systems in terms of their implementation requirements. These scores act as estimates. The implementation scoring system is organised following four categories: implementation time, utilising advanced technologies, cost (investment) associated with the intervention, and replication potential. The scoring scale adopted for this analysis varies across the categories. Implementation time: less than 3 months (1), 3-6 months (2), 6-12 months (3), 12-24 months (4), more than 24 months (5). Utilising advanced technologies: not relevant (0), somewhat relevant (1), relevant (2), very relevant (3). Cost (investment) associated with the intervention: short term (0-1 year) (1), medium term (1-3 years) (2), long term (3+ years) (3). Replication potential: easily replicable (1), potentially replicable (2), very difficult to replicate (3)

The GreenInCities Catalogue of Solutions, Practices, and Support Systems represents a valuable resource for sustainable urban transformation, offering practical guidance on integrating greening solutions, practices and support systems into cities. As an evolving document, it will continue to be refined and expanded to ensure its relevance and applicability, supporting cities in their transition towards greener, more resilient, and more inclusive urban environments.
