Urban Greening and Renaturing Cluster & EU Missions

About the Cluster

The Urban Greening and Renaturing Cluster brings together Horizon Europe projects that address urban regeneration, resilience, and climate neutrality through Nature-based Solutions. It is a collaborative space for exchanging knowledge, methodologies, and tools, while showcasing how NbS can help European cities adapt to climate change, improve liveability, and promote inclusive development.

Projects in the Cluster

As part of the Urban Greening and Renaturing Cluster, GreenInCities works alongside four Horizon Europe sister projects – ReGreeneration, URBREATH, ClimaGen and Commit2Green. Together, we form a collaborative ecosystem driving nature-positive and climate-resilient urban transformation across Europe.

  • New List Item

ReGreeneration unites nine European cities in a collective effort to reimagine urban neighbourhoods as vibrant hubs of sustainability, livability, and social cohesion. With a shared focus on regenerating challenged neighbourhoods with people-centred and nature-based solutions, this project is not merely about transforming physical landscapes. It embodies a holistic approach to urban regeneration, embracing a strategic, cross-sectoral approach to planning

  • New List Item

URBREATH aims to develop, implement, demonstrate, validate and replicate a comprehensive urban revitalisation methodology based on community and stakeholder participation focusing on greening and renaturing issues.

  • New List Item

ClimaGen aims to enhance resilience, prevent maladaptation and foster collaboration within local governance, incorporating arts, culture and youth engagement to drive sustainable urban transformation. ClimaGen project will demonstrate how such measures can help achieve net-zero emissions by increasing public green spaces by 25%.

  • New List Item

Commit2Green is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action project that supports eight European cities in developing integrated, participatory greening strategies aimed at achieving climate neutrality and urban resilience. The project facilitates a transition from isolated nature-based interventions to systemic, cross-scalar approaches embedded within city planning frameworks

How EU Missions drive the Urban Greening and Renaturing Agenda?

Both EU Missions , Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change are crucial to the Urban Green and Re-Naturing Cluster and to GreenInCities because they provide the overarching European frameworks driving its vision and objectives.

  • The Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities aims to help 100 European cities achieve climate neutrality by 2030 through systemic innovation, citizen engagement, and integrated urban planning. It prioritises decarbonisation, smart infrastructure, and participatory governance, all of which align with GreenInCities’ work in co-creating Nature-based Solutions and digital tools for climate-resilient urban regeneration. GreenInCities directly contributes to this mission by testing approaches that combine data-driven design, community participation, and digital twins to foster inclusive, low-carbon transformation in cities such as Helsinki, Athens, and Pécs, which are part of the 100 Mission Cities network.

  • Adaptation to Climate Change focuses on supporting European regions and local authorities in becoming climate-resilient by 2030. It promotes understanding of climate risks, developing adaptation strategies, and piloting solutions to reduce vulnerability. This mission underpins GreenInCities’ emphasis on climate adaptation, resilience building, and the integration of non-human stakeholders (such as pollinators, flora, and urban wildlife) into planning. The project’s interventions, like heat mitigation in Prato, flood prevention in Nova Gorica, or biodiversity enhancement in Helsinki, mirror the mission’s objectives to increase preparedness for extreme weather, improve ecosystem health, and enhance well-being for both people and nature.
